Four decades ago oil wells operated close to shore in relatively shallow water. Since then advances in exploration and production have enabled wells to reach reserves on the deeper continental shelf?and beyond. "If you had asked me in 1961," says Jim Emme, vice president for exploration at Houston's Anadarko Petroleum, "I'd have said that what we're doing now was impossible."
