Quantum cascade lasers (QCL) - new lasers for mid IR spectroscopy:
The mid IR spectral range (2.5 - 15 μm) has been very attractive for applied absorption spectroscopy because many compounds of interest exhibit the strongest absorption in this region which is extremely difficult for traditional laser sources. Until recently only complex laser systems or weak semiconductor lasers with cryogenic cooling were available for mid IR spectroscopy. Quantum cascade lasers (QCL) introduced by J. Faist et al. in 1994 and commercially available since 1999 are based on a tiny semiconductor structure grown by the method of molecular beam epitaxy. QCLs can be wavelength tailored by controlling the growth process to match any absorption feature in the range between 4 and 16 μm. Pulsed QCL supplied with Peltier cooling elements and having modest power consumption are promissing laser sources for the development of a new generation of filed-usable gas sensors for a variety of industrial, medical and environmental applications.
